1. The Fair Debt Collection Act
This is a simple public reparation act which discusses on how and when a particular debt should be collected. The Fair debt act is mainly designed for the protection of patients along with other consumers from the usual unlawful threats that they face from their creditors.
2. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
Also known as the HIPAA, this act was enacted in the year 1996 by the U.S. Congress. The act is parted into two titles, the title 1 and the title 2. The first title of the act regulates the individual health insurance plans, their availability and the range of these group plans. It amends to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act as well as the Public Health Service Act. This medical billing act title helps prevent a group health plan from further making their eligibility rules, choosing the insurance premiums of individuals in the group depending on their current health status, genetic information, disability and also medical history.
According to the next title, the act increases efficiency of the data exchange system for the financial transactions. It also protects privacy of these data transmission and the security of the patients. Patients are asked to make their claims electronically which further includes transmission of financial administrative dealings, electronic claims processing, billing and reimbursement advice. The act also imposes criminal penalties apart from the other control frauds.
3. The Privacy Rule
This last medical billing rule regulates the disclosure and use of the Protected Health Information. The Protected Health Information (PHI) is any probable information related to the health status, payment of health care, provision of the health care that is further related to any individual. Any individual who thinks that this rule is not properly being followed can easily file a complaint along with the related Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights.
