Wipro
Indian outsourcer Wipro has now set up a global services delivery center in Chengdu in southwest china with customers in U.S., Europe and other markets outsides the country. The company is already running a service center in Shanghai with all about 300 to 400 staff. According to Suchira Iyer, general manager at Wipro Chengdu the center, set up in 2004, is focused on Chinese operations of multinational companies and local customers.
Also Wipro is in move to open a global services facility in Chengdu reflecting a growing trend for Indian outsourcers to set up global delivery facilities outside India. Also Iyer said that the center is a part of our strategy to have development center globally, and to use local talent, which is available all across the world.
With this, Siddharth Pai, a partner at outsourcing consultancy technology partners international (TPI) in Houston said that Indian outsourcing companies will now have to become global with the flexibility to offer services from a large number of countries.
Some analyst said that setting up operations outside India also helps outsources to offer their customers assurance about business continuity and other disaster recovery.
Iyer said that the center at Chengdu has 100 staff with plans to increase the number to about 1,000 in few years and also Chengdu offers skilled staff at cost similar to those in India. She also said that the Chengdu has a large number of universities and there is large group of skilled staff; which Wipro hopes to hire. She also added that the local government is also actively promoting outsourcing.
Further, Wipro said that the Chengdu center will provide business process outsourcing (BPO) and IT and also added that the center will be have an initial focus on enterprise application services for manufacturing, insurance industries, banking and financial services and testing. And Wipro added that it will also provide multiannual services in Chinese, English and Japanese.
